Adam Kush Wins District VI Singles Championship

6.0 years ago @ 9:40AM

ALTOONA – Not even an injured ankle suffered two days before the start of the District 6 Class AA boys singles tournament could stop Westmont Hilltop’s Adam Kush.

All it could do was slow him down. Even then, the Hilltoppers ace powered through to the 6-AA championship with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bishop Guilfoyle’s Ryne Talko Thursday afternoon at Leopold Rec Center.

The win gives Kush a trip to next month’s PIAA Class AA singles tournament in Hershey.

“I wasn’t sure how I was going to do spraining my ankle two days before districts,” Kush said. “I was happy that I was able to fight through it and win.”

But how did the injury alter Kush’s game during the week?

“I tried to play as much of my game as I could,” Kush said. “I had to change a little bit. My movement was inhibited. It was a lot harder for me to get to the ball. I was struggling a little bit movement wise, so that caused me to have to go for more winners so I could stay away from long rallies.”

Kush seized momentum late in the first set, grabbing a 4-3 lead after the seventh game when he battled through four deuce points. While Talko tied the set at 4, Kush took the final two games and a one-set lead.

“They say that the most important game in every set is Game 7,” Kush said. “I happened to win both Game 7s in both sets, which was obviously a good thing to do.”

In Set 2, Kush and Talko exchanged wins through the first four games before Kush stormed away with winners in the final four games to secure the win.

Again, it was the seventh game of the set that set the tone for Kush. Again, the two played four points in deuce with Kush emerging with a 5-2 lead.

“Winning that was huge because it made it 5-2 instead of 4-3,” Kush said. “So, that kind of broke his confidence a bit.”
