Weinzierl Named to Pennsylvania Football News Second Team All State

Eighteen area players were recognized on the Pennsylvania Football News 2016 all-state football team, including six first-team picks and one player of the year.

Ligonier Valley linebacker Elijah Parrish was named the Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team selection on the PFN Class AA team. He was joined on the Class AA first team by Rams teammates Collin Smith at quarterback and Jackson Daugherty at wide receiver.

Smith and Parrish are seniors, and Daugherty is a junior. Also recognized from the Rams’ state semifinal squad are sophomore Aaron Tutino, a second-team wide receiver, and Jake Neiderhiser, a junior second-team defensive lineman.

 

Berlin Brothervalley’s Mark Craig, a senior, earned first-team defensive line in Class AA.

Cambria Heights junior Evan Bobby and Westmont Hilltop senior Mike Weinzierl each earned second team on the offensive line, and Berlin Brothersvalley junior Carter Raupach and Cambria Heights senior James Baum were second-team picks at place kicker and punter, respectively.

In Class AAAA, Greater Johnstown senior Exree Loe was a first-team selection at defensive back. The Trojans’ Austin Barber, a junior quarterback; Bryce Gibson, a senior running back, and Shamar Jones, a junior defensive lineman, each were second-team selections in AAAA from the Trojans’ Subregion 5-6-9 champion, state quarterfinalist team.

 

In Class AAA, Bedford senior Tanner Coughenour was a first-team selection at defensive line.

Forest Hills senior Tanner Gavlak was an honorable mention offensive lineman.

In Class A, Penn Cambria graduate Justin Wheeler was named Coach of the Year after leading Bishop Guilfoyle to its third straight state title. Two of his Marauders took player of the year honors in Luke Frederick (defense) and Logan McGeary (lineman).

Portage senior Braedon St. Clair was a second-team pick at running back, and Meyersdale senior Riley Christner was a second-team selection at defensive back.
